MASON, OH – Four Mars Hill Academy students will advance to the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Regional Fifth through Eighth Grade Spelling Bee after placing first, second, third and fourth overall in the District Spelling Bee held Saturday, January 18 at Cincinnati Christian School in Fairfield. With a fifth Mars Hill student placing as the alternate, Mars Hill secured all five top spots in the district bee. The regional competition will be held at Ohio Christian University in Circleville, on Saturday, March 22.
Students placing first through fourth in their classroom competitions competed in the overall competition to advance to the regional bee. Mars Hill seventh grader Drew Deister of Cincinnati won first place overall. Eighth grader Hannah Min of Mason placed second; sixth grader Kyle Chu of Cincinnati placed third; sixth grader Faith Min of Mason placed fourth; and fifth grader Eileen Park of Maineville placed fifth, earning the spot of alternate.
“Our students excel in these competitions because of Mars Hill’s commitment to the classical model of education which incorporates constant review of principles and details,” said James Waldy, MHA Grammar School Principal. “At this age, they find it almost effortless to memorize over 70 phonograms, which are the building blocks to the spelling and pronunciation of the English language.”
At the ACSI district spelling bee, awards go to the top four spellers in each grade. Mars Hill Academy students earned 17 of 28 possible awards, placing first in each of the second through eighth grade class competitions.
The first place class finishers were eighth grader Ryan O’Connor of Mason; seventh grader Drew Deister of Cincinnati; sixth grader Kyle Chu of Cincinnati; fifth grader Eileen Park of Maineville; fourth grader Noelle Min of Mason; third grader William Kwan of West Chester, and second grader Vikrant Chachare of Mason.
ACSI is comprised of nearly 24,000 member Christian schools in 100 nations worldwide. The ACSI annually conducts spelling bees across the nation, culminating in a national contest held on May 3 in Dallas, TX.
