MASON, OH – Eighteen Mars Hill Academy students received top honors on the 2015 National Latin Exam (NLE). Students earning the Gold Summa Cum Laude Award are sixth graders Michaela Estruth of Cincinnati, Luke Gage of Cincinnati, James Gerkin of Kings Mills, Madisyn Jones of West Chester, Julia Leonard of Liberty Township, Hana Owen of Trenton, and Peter Reynolds of Cincinnati; seventh graders Kyle Chu of Cincinnati and Etienne Pienaar of Maineville; eighth graders Drew Deister of Cincinnati and Gita O’Brien of Liberty Township; and ninth grader Heather Merhout of Liberty Township.

Sixth fifth grade students achieved perfect scores: Alexandra Anderson of West Chester, Nathan Cox of Maineville, Megumi Fukuda of Mason, Noelle Min of Mason, Ethan Ruppersburg of Liberty Township, and Rachel Tipton of Loveland.

Nearly seventy-eight percent of the Mars Hill students in grades 5-9 who took the NLE received awards. Students at Mars Hill begin their Latin studies in fourth grade as part of the school’s classical and Christian curriculum, with participation in the NLE beginning in fifth grade. The NLEs were created to promote the study of Latin and to encourage the individual student. Students do not compete with other students on a comparative basis, but are evaluated solely on their own performance on the exam.
