MASON, OH – Sixteen Mars Hill Academy students received top honors on the 2017 National Latin Exam (NLE). Fifth grade student Clay Heap of Mason achieved a Perfect Score.
Students earning the Gold Summa Cum Laude Award are sixth graders Abby Bowling of Hamilton, Marianne Erickson of Mason, Sarah Harris of Lebanon, Elise Lockett of Mason, Carrie Merhout of Liberty Township, Joshua Miller of Cincinnati, Ellen Reynolds of Cincinnati, Janie Wehmeyer of Cincinnati, and Caleb White of Liberty Township; seventh graders Megumi Fukuda of Mason, Daryn Hancock of Liberty Township, and Noelle Min of Mason; eighth grader Michaela Estruth of Mason; and ninth graders Kyle Chu of Cincinnati and Etienne Pienaar of Maineville.
Sixty-three percent of the Mars Hill Academy students in grades 5-9 who took the NLE received awards. Students at MHA begin their Latin studies in fourth grade as part of the school’s classical and Christian curriculum, with participation in the NLE beginning in fifth grade. The NLEs were created to promote the study of Latin and to encourage the individual student. Students do not compete with other students on a comparative basis, but are evaluated solely on their own performance on the exam.
