Logic (Grades 7-8)
Using formal logic as a tool, Mars Hill Academy students in grades 7-8 study the ordered relationship of the facts and ideas they committed to memory in the Grammar years.
Because we desire our students to think clearly and logically, a Mars Hill Academy education includes courses in formal logic. Logic is the study and practice of correct reasoning, which helps us make sense of everything including the Bible. Through the study of logic, Mars Hill students sharpen their abilities to evaluate differing opinions, follow and refute an argument given by someone else, distinguish between excellent and poor writing, pursue learning on their own, and defend their faith.
In addition to Logic classes, students read great works of literature such as The Count of Monte Cristo and Ivanhoe, continue their Latin studies or begin learning Spanish, survey in depth the Old and New Testaments, study Earth and Space Science and the American Constitution, and begin learning Algebra. Students participate in choir, and may take art classes, or join the cast of their annual MHA fall drama. Seventh graders enjoy a weekend camping adventure, and take a class trip to Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. Eighth graders study and perform an adaptation of a Shakespeare play, and enjoy dancing, fellowship, and performances at the annual “Victorian Ball.” In ninth grade, MHA students begin to study Rhetoric.
